Monica Clua presents her work at the Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education Symposium

On 16 and 17 October, Monica Clua, a lecturer from the Institute for Multilingualism at UIC Barcelona, presented part of her doctoral work at the Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education Symposium (ICLHE), hosted this year by the Pompeu Fabra University under the title “Plurality and singularity: Multilingual policies and specific situated academic actions”.

With her presentation “Actions speak louder than words: A multimodal approach to interactional competence in an English-Medium university lecture”, the lecturer illustrated the fundamental contribution of a teacher’s spatial behaviour, gesture and gaze to the construction of classroom discourse and knowledge.

The aim of the symposium, in addition to exploring the cultural and linguistic atmosphere of educational institutions, is to analyse how multilingual policies can help universities recognise and develop their own specificities in a globalised world.

Monica and the other two PhD students who also presented at the event were each awarded a €200 grant.
