The most cultural April at UIC Barcelona comes to an end

Theatre, poetry, books, painting, music, cinema, stories and sports filled both campuses of the university throughout April, with a wide range of activities organised by Student Services.

It kicked off with Paul Ponce, who told his own story as well as offering a juggling show.  Writer Olga Brajnovic also shared stories and experiences during April, and presented her book entitled "Una odisea amor y guerra” containing her own parents’ story of love and overcoming obstacles.  She presented her book at this month’s Coffee & Books session.

The winners of the literary competition and the photography competition were also announced during this month. In the former case, the winning short story was "Días de noche", by Antoni Gallemí, a secondyear journalism student.  And the winning poem was "Almendro", by Eduardo María Prats, a second-year journalism and public relations student.  In the second competition, on our Barcelona campus, the winner was Marc Alabau, a 1st year audiovisual communication student with his photographs "Alpha" and "Shere Khan". On our Sant Cugat campus, the winner was Emma de Ribot, a first-year nursing student, with her photograph "Mirada".  Both the photographs and the stories from the literary competition, as well as work by the painting group were exhibited on both campuses throughout April.

Music also put in an appearance in April with a Gospel concert on our Sant Cugat campus, with the placement of a grand piano for a day on each campus, thanks to the Maria Canals Association Competition.  The university community also had the opportunity to attend the grand finale of the Maria Canals Competition which took place in the Palau de la Música.

Saint George’s Day was a special day on both campuses, and included a multilingual literary aperitif organised by the Institute for Multilingualism, books being sold by the Garbí bookshop and roses for solidarity being sold on behalf of the Guatemala summer camp project for solidarity.  The next day, the theatre group on our Sant Cugat campus put on a play entitled "La cantante calva".  On the same day on our Barcelona campus, artist Cinta Vidal began to create two murals on campus which will soon be complete.

Cultural getaways were also some of the special activities organised in the month of April.  The university community was able to visit the Sagrada Familia and also Barcelona Cathedral, guided by Dr Judith Urbano, dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

The cinema group also participated by offering activities which included watching and subsequently discussing the film “Jaws” by Steven Spielberg. The gastronomy group also offered a gastronomic springtime tasting activity.

Finally, sports and physical activities also took place in April.  The first week of April was Health Week, which included activities to improve and work on the physical health of the whole university community.  The Rector’s 7-aside Football Tournament was also held during this month.

In short, and as was announced in the initial manifesto, throughout April culture came out of the classroom and imbued “every corner of the city, and the university”.
