Nuria Matilla, researcher from the Department of Basic Sciences, awarded at the 35th Annual Scientific Meeting of the SEE and the 12th APE Congress

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Department of Basic Sciences presented five papers at the 35th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) and the 12th Portuguese Society of Epidemiology (APE) Congress, which took place in Barcelona.

The researchers from the University’s Health Determinants and Health Policies Assessment Group took part with the following presentations: “Evaluación de la concentración de cotinina en saliva en los fumadores antes y después de las legislaciones Españolas del tabaco” [Evaluation of the concentration of cotinine in the saliva of smokers before and after Spain’s tobacco control laws], “Comparación de modelos predictivos de la tasa de mortalidad por cáncer de pulmón según sexos en España” [Comparison of models for predicting lung cancer mortality rates by gender in Spain], “Patterns of use of electronic cigarettes in Barcelona”, “Validez de la medición de la exposición a humo ambiental de tabaco en el hogar mediante cuestionario” [Validity of using surveys to measure exposure to second-hand smoke at home] and “Uso del cigarrillo electrónico en espacios públicos y privados en Barcelona” [Use of electronic cigarettes in public and private spaces in Barcelona]. Researcher Nuria Matilla, author of the latter paper, received the award for best paper presented by a first time participant in this congress.

The event’s scientific programme also focused on other highly relevant and decisive factors in public health, such as global warming, social inequalities in health, education, the importance of vertical social mobility and big data.
