Oriol Rusca: «Progress in the exercise of law should not affect lawyer’s values»

The Saló de Graus at UIC Barcelona on 27 April hosted a talk on “The future for those in the legal profession” given by Oriol Rusca, Dean of the Illustrious Society of Lawyers of Barcelona (ICAB) as part of a series of continuing education conferences which the Faculty of Law organises throughout the academic year.

“The legal profession has undergone a series of changes (technological etc.).  However these changes should not affect our values, since law is much more than a business” stated Oriol Rusca.

The Dean from the ICAB explained that in order to have these values it is necessary to find their origin “which is none other than Christian humanism”.  In that sense he underlined the fact that even when these values remain intact, this does not mean that they cannot adapt to society at all times.

In his talk Rusca also talked about the importance of lawyers.  He specifically pointed out their role in three cases: in the case of the state, since judicial power is one of the three powers of the state; in the case of society, since lawyers are in charge of protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens; and in the case of the professional field, since lawyers are placed at the service of people’s rights.

On the other hand, he emphasised the characteristics that a good lawyer must have: independence, adherence to professional ethics, and to professional secrecy.  In terms of the latter concept, Rusca underlined the fact that “lawyers are committed both ethically and legally to not violate clients’ right to privacy when they entrust them with private information”.

After the conference, the Dean visited the university facilities, including the Sala de Visitas in the Faculty of Law which changed to a new location a few weeks ago.
