Pablo Cardona: “The process of digital transformation is giving rise to new contributors”

Dr Pablo Cardona, dean of the Faculty of Business and Communication at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR), gave a talk at the most recent edition of “Desayunos Cátedra”, organised by the Chair for Management by Missions and Corporate Governance.

Cardona holds a PhD in Management from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has also worked as a lecturer at IESE (Barcelona) and CEIBS (Shanghai), where he has lived for the past six years.

During his presentation, Dr Cardona broached the subject of "management by missions in the digital transformation era".

According to the professor, the technological revolution is forcing both society and businesses to take a new course. This has resulted in the disappearance of many traditional jobs, while the process of digital transformation is giving rise to new “contributors”, people who go from being employees to using their knowledge to help companies develop their projects.

As a result, the both employees and organisations will need to adapt to change. Traditional authoritarian bosses will gradually fade away, and the workers -who will become contributors- will have the opportunity to be involved in a number of temporary projects, as required by the new needs of society and clients.

According to Dr Cardona, this technological revolution will make people more motivated and increase their sense of mission in their jobs. “The varied nature of the projects will be new avenue for workers to take part in various projects and fulfil their personal mission”, maintains the professor.

Pablo Cardona has served as a consultant in numerous fields, including cultural change management, talent development and the creation of high-performance teams. He has worked with companies such as Abbott, Danone, Sony, Nestlé, Oracle, Repsol and Roche. His publications include Paradigmas del liderazgo [Leadership Paradigms], Las claves del talento [The Keys to Talent], Cómo desarrollar las competencias del liderazgo [How to Develop Leadership Skills] and La dirección por misiones [Management by Missions].

The aim of “Desayunos Cátedra” is to establish a meeting point between the academic and business worlds and generate debate on issues related to business humanism.
