Peace, the common thread running through the 8th Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop
On Wednesday the university celebrated the eighth edition of the Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop, this year entitled “Let’s Build Peace to Promote Sustainable Development”. The objective of this year's workshop, led by Sílvia Albareda, Director of + Sustainable UIC Barcelona, was to study the relationship between the promotion of peace and sustainable development. In total, 23 projects were presented by students, related to the topic of the workshop, both in the form of posters and workshops.
The Cross-Disciplinary Sustainability Workshop began with a round table entitled “Stories to Promote Peace”, with participation from Dr Dolores Limón, a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Sevilla and Director of an educational project for citizenship in contexts of social exclusion in Senegal. Another participant was Ousman Umar, a young man from Ghana who described his personal odyssey which ended with his arrival in Spain in search of a better future. The round table was moderated by Alberto Estévez, Vice-Rector of Organisation and Planning at UIC Barcelona, and then an open debate was held among the attendees.
Subsequently students gave workshop and poster presentations to university assessors. They discussed various topics related to the promotion of peace and sustainable development, such as solar energy and war, malnutrition and child exploitation, and eco-refugees, etc.
Finally, the eighth edition of the Cross-Disciplinary Workshop was closed by Dr Emilio Chuvieco, a Full Professor of Geography in the University of Alcalá de Henares and Director of the Environmental Ethics Chair. Hios closing session involved a talk-colloquium on the ethical basis of ethical consumption.
