The award was presented by the Spanish Society for Periodontology for the work carried out by the Periodontics Department at UIC Barcelona, involving a clinical trial on patients whose prostheses were modified in order to improve their treatment of peri-implant mucositis
The UIC Barcelona Periodontics Department, led by Dr José Nart, was recently presented with the Fonseca Award 2020 for the best Journal Citation Reports (JCR) publication, in recognition of their study on the modification of implant prostheses to facilitate access to oral hygiene when treating peri-implant mucositis.
Titled Adjunctive effect of modifying the implant‐supported prosthesis in the treatment of peri‐implant mucositis, the article outlines a clinical trial in which patients who did not modify their implant-supported prosthesis experienced a significant increase in peri-implant mucositis, while the group that did receive the modification showed progressive and steady improvement. “Mucositis is considered a precursor to peri-implantitis and for that reason the first line of action in preventing these conditions is obtaining results through this kind of treatment”, explained Dr Beatriz de Tapia, the study’s principal author.
The Fonseca Award is the most renowned international award offered by the Spanish Society for Periodontology. “It is a huge honour to have been presented with this award”, said Tapia. “It is incredibly exciting to receive such an important recognition among the scientific community for our effort and work”.
