“The inflammation that is specific to periodontal disease has an impact on the whole body. That is why it is fundamental to control this pathology and thus avoid problems both in the oral cavity and in terms of general health” said Dr José Nart, head of the area of Periodontics and director of the Master's Degree in Periodontology in the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Dentistry, and secretary of the Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osteointegration (SEPA).
Dr Nart is one of the experts who participated in this year’s edition of the Periodontology and Oral Health Conference organised by SEPA. This is an important European event that brings together 5.000 international professionals from the sector.
The data presented in the first days of the conference showed that periodontitis will affect up to 12 million Spanish people over the next few years. In order to help to reduce its impact, experts consider it essential to incorporate this dental and medical specialisation into other disciplines, and promote multidisciplinary studies and more comprehensive approaches to this issue.
