The Punta del Este Cluster reflects on Smart Cities during the celebration of its most recent anniversary

In late September, the Punta del Este University City Cluster, with which UIC Barcelona cooperates, celebrated its sixth anniversary in Uruguay. The event, in which the central theme was Smart Cities, featured the participation of numerous institutions of reference for the university, institutions from both the public and private sectors, which showcased different local experiences with regard to sustainable development and the Internet of Things.

Dr Faral, who coordinates the Cluster, briefly outlined the milestones achieved in recent years and declared that, "We are witnessing the construction of a completely new setting in this country; one of public-private cooperation between academia, businesses and the state which intends to make Punta del Este a great place to study. This is the path we are on, and to summarise progress in figures: in five years, the number of university students in the city has doubled."

The event was organised with the help of Dr Emilia Arrighi, Assistant Director of the Albert J. Jovell Institute for Public Health and Patients, according to whom, "for UIC Barcelona, being part of this innovative project is one of the specific actions undertaken in fulfilment of the University's internationalisation strategy in Latin America."
