Reducing our ecological footprint, the central focus of the 10th Cross-Disciplinary Workshop on Sustainability
On 22 November, UIC Barcelona hosted the tenth edition of the Cross-Disciplinary Workshop, which this year was entitled “How can we reduce our ecological footprint without losing quality of life?” This activity was one the activities organised by UIC Barcelona as part of Science Week 2018.
The aim of this edition was to make an interdisciplinary reflection on sustainable consumption, analysing the relationship between consumption and the reduction of our ecological footprint without diminishing the quality of life, in line with goal number 12 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: To ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns.
Through the presentation of 37 projects by students from different degree programmes, which were assessed by 31 evaluators from UIC Barcelona and other universities and institutions, including the Barcelona City Council, a number of issues related to sustainable consumption were analysed from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The workshop began with a conference on the circular economy by Dr Angelo Paletta, vice-chancellor and professor of Business Administration at the University of Bologna, which was followed by the student presentations.
Finally, late in the morning, Dr Gabriel Fernández, a lecturer at UIC Barcelona, and Dr Dídac Ferrer-Balas, from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, moderated the round table “How to be more sustainable on a day-to-day basis”, which dealt with two types of resources that we all use: electronic devices and plastics.
