Salvador Vidal discusses interactive mathematics in a book published by the Catholic University of Portugal

Faculty of Education lecturer Salvador Vidal was involved in the publication of the book Professores e escolas. Conheciminto, formação e ação [Teachers and Schools: Knowledge, Education and Action] by the Catholic University of Portugal (Porto).

The chapter entitled "Interactive Multimedia Mathematics" is the result of Professor Vidal's time in Porto last February as part of the Erasmus+ programme. "The text", explains the Professor, "is mainly about motivation towards mathematics and shows that improving attitudes towards the subject helps improve learning as well".

With regard to the common aversion to this discipline, Salvador Vidal, a lecturer in Teaching and Learning Mathematics, explains that, "it is important to frame the subject in an appealing light and stress its usefulness, as maths are used to solve everyday problems".

In this regard, the book puts forward several proposals, such as Number Day, "a source of inspiration and creativity that helps us realise that we can have fun with numbers", and Maths Lab, "where students are required to use mathematics in a series of games and apply the course content to the reality of the game".
