The student Marta Giménez is the winner of the 12th Daniel Montesinos Sports Journalism Prize
The Mediterranean International Cup (MICFootball) is a grassroots football tournament that organises the awards each year to foster young talent in sports journalism. In the twelfth edition, the second-year student of Journalism at the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Communication Sciences won the award for a report on investment in women’s grassroots football over recent years.
Marta Giménez received the award from the Montesinos family on the day of the opening of the tournament, which took place in Figueres, on 27 March.
The task was to prepare a report in written or audiovisual format under the theme of grassroots football. The second-year journalism student made a video report on the change that women’s grassroots football has experienced in investment in recent years. She interviewed different representatives of clubs such as Sant Cugat Football Club, Grama Sports Foundation, Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol and Levante Las Planas Football Club.
In addition to the trophy, she completed an internship on the GOL Play channel and has had the opportunity to be part of the MIC Football press team throughout the tournament. “I have been taking full advantage of the opportunity to work with the communications team all week,” said Marta, grateful. “It is a big advancement for me as a future journalist to be able to experience this important tournament from the inside.”
MIC Football organises this recognition in honour of sports journalist Daniel Montesinos, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 36. This honorary award, on behalf of the head of sports at La Sexta, is a recognition of young talent in sports journalism.
