Students from the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, award-winners at Cevisama for the thirteenth year straight

The jury at the 2017 Cevisama Lab Ceramic and Bathroom Design Competition once again gave awards for projects designed by students from UIC Barcelona’s Barcelona Ceramics Chair. These included one first-place award, two second-place awards and one runner-up award. This is the thirteenth year that UIC Barcelona has been recognised and received awards at this competition.

Alexandre Mistrali Betriu took home a second-place award in Category A, Semi-Dry Pressed Ceramic Products, for his project "Frame". The jury felt that this project was as "an innovative tile solution thanks to its flexibility and use of chromatic tones".

Laurence Dugardyn was awarded first place in Category B, Ceramic Products Formed by Other Methods. According to the jury, her project, "Intertwined", "builds upon a traditional construction system which, through the use of just one piece, is capable of creating emotional shapes." The project involves creating a piece with two identical parts, which, when joined together, form one single unit, generating a different perception of the space and the interplay of light and shade.

Second place in Category B went to Marta Esqueu Casals for her proposal "Paves". This project provides a solution to an existing problem in the use of vitreous material and, according to the jury, "holds great potential." A runner-up award was also given for "Ceramic Branch", an idea by Ariadna Martínez, "as it applies the immutable characteristics of ceramics to traditional and ephemeral structures through one single ceramic element."

The competition jury was made up of Isabel Navarro, from the Regional Association of Architects of Valencia; Pedro Díaz, from the Association of Interior Designers of the Community of Valencia; Carmen Navarro, on behalf of the company Grespania; designer Ximo Roca; and journalist Gemma Tost, from the magazine On Diseño.

The award-winning projects will be displayed in pavilions 2 and 4 of the Valencia Exhibition Centre. The award ceremony will take place on Friday 24 February.
