UIC Barcelona, one of the five Spanish private universities in the Shanghai Ranking

UIC Barcelona has appeared for the first time in the Shanghai Ranking of academic subjects 2018 for the subject area Dentistry & Oral Sciences. On a global scale, it occupies positions 151-200 and on a national scale it is the third in this field.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU or Shanghai Ranking) is one of the most renowned university rankings in the world. It is a list drawn up by a group of specialists at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) assessing the quality of the best universities in the world.

In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018, more than 4,000 universities have been ranked in order of excellence in 54 subjects, divided into five areas: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The specialists based their ranking on five criteria: the number of articles published, the percentage of citations, appearing in (at least) two international journals, publication in prestigious journals and the number of researchers awarded.

All of the information sources consulted are public and include: nobelprize.org; Web of Science, Fields Medals, the Spanish Office for National Statistics and the Spanish Ministry of Education, among others.

On a national scale, only five Spanish private universities (of a total of 32) appear in the ranking, which includes UIC Barcelona.
