Introduction

Molecular biology is the scientific discipline that aims to study the processes taking place in living organisms from a molecular point of view

The field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology relates primarily to an understanding of the interactions between the different systems in a cell, including the interactions between the DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and learning how these interactions are analyzed.

Pre-course requirements

Not required

Objectives

  • Deepen knowledge of Molecular and Cell Biology, acquiring an integrative view.
  • Acquire a systematic, rigorous and updated knowledge and a critical view of the main themes of the scientific area of specialization within the field of Molecular and Cell Biology.
  • Acquire the knowledge and ability to identify problems, find practical and creative solutions and to implement them in the context of research in the field of Molecular and Cell Biology.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB10 - Acquire learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous mode.
  • CB7 - To apply the acquired knowledge, and develop their ability to solve problems in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
  • CE8 - Being able to apply the appropriate diagnostic techniques and interpret the results derived from them
  • CG2 - Ability to review analysis and discussion of the experimental results and to issue the corresponding conclusions.
  • CG3 - Self learning ability in the development of new techniques, in the knowledge of new scientific concepts and in the search of new scientific information
  • CT1 - Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Has ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Has ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity.
  • It is able to apply the knowledge acquired in solving problems in a new or changing environment.
  • It has self-learning ability in the development of analytical techniques in the acquisition of new concepts from the field of molecular and cell biology and tissue regeneration and the search of new scientific information.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Teaching activities: Lectures about each chapter (CM)

Learning activities:

a) Activities about Chapter 1 and 2 available on the intranet

b) Activities about a real scientific article

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Final exam (50%)

Activities (40%)

Continuous evaluation (10%)

To the mean is necessary to have, at least, 5 points in all parts evaluated.

The exams will be multiple choices with five answer choices and only 1 correct. The correct answers sum +1 and the failures subtract -0.33.
