Introduction
The subject Integrated Biomedicine is part of a block of subjects located in the second semester of the first three courses. These subjects intend, as the name suggests, to integrate the concepts that have been worked on in each course, to solve a basic, clinical or technical problem by sharing the concepts that have been received so far. Each of the Integrated Biomedicines of the curriculum has a specific practice and activities.
Pre-course requirements
Knowledge of biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, structure and function of the nervous and endocrine system, genetics, microbiology and bases of pathology
Objectives
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- CB01 - Students must demonstrate that they have and understand knowledge in an area of study that is based on general secondary education, and it tends to be found at a level that, although it is based on advanced textbooks, also includes some aspects that involve knowledge from the cutting-edge of their field of study.
- CB02 - Students must know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and have the competences that tend to be demonstrated through the creation and defence of arguments and the resolution of problems within their field of study.
- CB03 - Students must have the ability to bring together and interpret significant data (normally within their area of study) to issue judgements that include a reflection on significant issues of a social, scientific and ethical nature.
- CB04 - That students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- CE20 - To resolve problems related to biomedical sciences, both at a theoretical and an experimental level, adding basic knowledge to clinical, pharmacological, pathological, technological and business knowledge in a cross-disciplinary way.
- CG07 - To incorporate basic concepts related to the field of biomedicine both at a theoretical and an experimental level.
- CT01 - To develop the organisational and planning skills that are suitable in each moment.
- CT02 - To develop the ability to resolve problems.
- CT03 - To develop analytical and summarising skills.
- CT04 - To interpret experimental results and identify consistent and inconsistent elements.
- CT05 - To use the internet as a means of communication and a source of information.
- CT06 - To know how to communicate, give presentations and write up scientific reports.
- CT07 - To be capable of working in a team.
- CT08 - To reason and evaluate situations and results from a critical and constructive point of view.
- CT09 - To have the ability to develop interpersonal skills.
- CT10 - To be capable of autonomous learning.
- CT11 - To apply theoretical knowledge to practice.
- CT12 - To apply scientific method.
- CT13 - To be aware of the general and specific aspects related to the field of nutrition and ageing.
- CT14 - To respect the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, and the promotion of human rights and the values that are specific to a culture of peace and democratic values.
Learning outcomes of the subject
- Integrates basic and clinical knowledge in the same context.
- Develop the basic generic competences.
- Use the concepts learned in the course to interpret an article and present it to a specialized audience, in poster format.
- Integrates biomedical concepts to solve issues and theoretical and practical problems related to health sciences.
- Understands and critically assesses original scientific articles and reviews in the field of biomedicine, and is able to defend the results in front of a specialized audience
Syllabus
Posters: the theme chosen this year is articles related to different aspects of science, such as neurobiology and cancer.
MCs: will cover knowledge that will help us to work in the laboratory and also some seminars related to biomedical research.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
Clinical cases or case methods (MC): Approach of a real or imaginary situation. Students work on questions formulated in small groups or in active interaction with the teacher and the answers are discussed. The teacher intervenes actively and if necessary brings new knowledge.
Group academic tutoring: tutorial activity carried out in small groups to promote reflection and orientation towards the improvement and development of poster communication.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
The grade will be calculated based on the following percentages:
Students in first call:
Preparation and Presentation of the Poster: 50%. Of this grade:
(a) 40% for poster preparation:
- 10% Attendance at all tutorials and good attitude
- 10% Review of the scientific article
- 10% Submissions within the established deadlines
- 10% Corrections made according to instructions
(b) 60% for poster presentation:
- 20% for the content of the explanation and the appropriate use of non-verbal language
- 20% for the ability to answer questions using appropriate scientific language
- 10% for the ability to adhere to the stipulated time
- 10% for the design of the poster
Remaining case methods: 50%
Participation in ES-Day: students who participate in all sessions of Entrepreneurship & Social Day (E&S-Day) will receive 0.5 extra points on the final grade. Students in second or posterior call: will make an equivalent evaluation to the failed part in which they must obtain a 5 in order to pass and make an average with the rest of the notes. The passed marks will be saved unless the student wants to assist and repeat them. General points to keep in mind about the evaluation system: 1) Attendance at the rehearsal and the poster presentation is mandatory to pass this part of the subject. 2) Attendance at CM is mandatory. To have the grade of this part of the subject it is necessary to attend a minimum of 16 among 17 sessions. 3) In order to pass the subject, it is mandatory to get a minimum mark of 5 in each part and in the total average. 4) The improper use of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets or laptops can lead to expulsion from class. Improper use means the recording and dissemination of both students and teachers during the different sessions. 5) Excellence in class will be positively considered and may lead to an increase of 10% of the grade. 6) Regarding Honors, special consideration will be given to the candidates for their participation and involvement in the different methodologies of the subject, as well as respect for the basic rules.Bibliography and resources
The bibliography will be specific for each case worked and will be indicated in each session.
