Introduction

Demographic projections for the coming years tell us of an aging population with more chronic medical pathologies. The social reality is making a considerable number of people with special needs, frail elderly or with important chronic pathologies live in residences or specific centers. These patients require dental care that goes beyond the mere routine and one-off care function, encompassing prevention concepts and incorporating differentiated equipment and work techniques

Pre-course requirements

Degree in dentistry or stomatology
Access from other health branches will be assessed by the management of the Master's degree

Objectives

That the dentists connect the institutions, residences, care centers or internally of the patients with special needs, the handling techniques of these patients and the logistics that are necessary in these cases

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • Train dentists knowledgeable about the medical and pharmacological pathologies that condition dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients.
  • Train dentists capable of integrating into multidisciplinary care teams for the elderly.
  • Train dentists capable of knowing the particularities of dental treatment that is carried out in a hospital environment under sedation and/or anesthesia techniques.
  • To train dentists interested in research and the study of aging, disability and oral pathology.
  • To train odontologists able to treat patients with medical or pharmacological commitment dentally.
  • Train dentists capable of knowing the diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal lesions.
  • To train dentists knowledgeable about the medical, social, psychological and structural characteristics of institutionalized patients and receiving institutions

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Dentists who are familiar with the medical and pharmacological pathologies that affect dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients.
  • Dentists who are able to integrate into multidisciplinary teams for the elderly.
  • Dentists who are able to understand the particularities of dental treatment carried out in a hospital environment using sedation and/or anesthesia techniques.
  • Dentists who are interested in research and the study of old age, disability and oral pathology.
  • Dentists who are able to provide dental treatment to patients with medical or pharmacological involvement.
  • Dentists who are able to understand the diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal lesions.
  • Dentists who are familiar with the medical, social, psychological and structural characteristics of institutionalized patients and the care institutions.

Syllabus

Assistance and treatment in a hospital environment for mentally handicapped patients: hygienic phase (hygienes, scrapings, etc.), surgical (extractions, implant surgery, etc.), conservative (fillings, root canals, etc.), rehabilitative (removable, fixed, implant-retained, implant-supported prostheses, etc.)

Assistance and treatment in residential institutions for elderly patients: hygienic phase (hygienes, scrapings, etc.), preventive (applications of fluoride varnishes, silver diamine fluorides, etc.), rehabilitative (removable prostheses, relines, etc.), conservative (minimally invasive dentistry)

Assistance and treatment in any institution that accommodates or cares for patients with special needs: hygienic phase (hygienes, scrapings, etc.), preventive (applications of fluoride varnishes, silver diamine fluorides, etc.), rehabilitative (removable prostheses, relines, etc.), conservative (minimally invasive dentistry)

Assistance and treatment of patients at the University Dental Clinic for 2 weeks in July: hygiene phase (hygiene, scaling, etc.), surgical phase (extractions, implant surgery, etc.), conservative phase (fillings, root canals, etc.), rehabilitation phase (removable, fixed, implant-retained, implant-supported prosthesis, etc.)
