Introduction
The Practicum will be conducted in a research laboratory, either nationally or internationally, and is designed for the student to consolidate specific practical knowledge that will allow them to acquire practical skills compatible with the beginning of doctoral studies.
During the Practicum, the students will develop a research project supervised by established research group leaders.
Pre-course requirements
To enroll in the practicum, it is recommended to have completed and passed courses related to:
- Cell Biology
- Molecular Biology
- Biochemistry
- Genetics
- Microbiology
- Laboratory Techniques
Objectives
- Conduct experiments related to a research project with a high degree of autonomy.
- Answer a biomedical question through the acquisition of experimental results.
- Identify communication tools that will facilitate the integration of the student into the host research group.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- C5 - Acquire a high degree of autonomy in practical activity, which prepares students to undertake doctoral studies in biomedical research.
- C6 - Identify the employment possibilities of a scientific career, considering the principles of ethics and research integrity.
Learning outcomes of the subject
- Ability to solve problems associated with biomedical research laboratory practice with a high degree of autonomy.
- Ability to decide which experimental methodology is most appropriate for the objectives set in various fields of biomedical research.
- Ability to argue scientific results, either their own or those of other researchers, in an oral presentation.
- Develop the ability to critically evaluate research and current advances in the field of biomedical sciences, assessing methodologies and, if necessary, proposing new approaches/hypotheses.
- Ability to critically evaluate one's own execution of experiments and tasks associated with laboratory work.
- Report periodically on the progress of the practices.
Syllabus
The content of the practices depends on the chosen destination and the type of project proposed in the work plan, and must be agreed upon with the tutor. The work plan will be evaluated by the practicum coordination team and must be approved before starting. The Practicum will be supported by an agreement between the university and the host research center.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
First attempt students:
- 20%: partial evaluation of the practices by the external tutor.
- 40%: final evaluation of the practices by the external tutor.
- 40%: practice report written by the student and corrected by the academic tutor.
Attending at least 3 tutorials with the academic tutor is mandatory to pass the subject.
Second or subsequent attempt students:
Must redo the practice report and defend it in an oral presentation.
General points about the evaluation system:
- A minimum of 5 must be obtained in the practice report to pass the subject.
- Plagiarism, copying, or any other action considered cheating will result in a zero in that evaluation section.
- In the second attempt, the highest grade possible is "Excellent"; "Honors" cannot be obtained.
- Exchange students (Erasmus and others) or repeat students are subject to the same conditions as other students.
