Introduction
The objective of the external academic internships is to allow students to apply and complement the knowledge acquired during the master's degree, and to favor the acquisition of competencies that will prepare them for the exercise of professional activities, facilitate their employability and foster their entrepreneurial skills. The external academic practices of the master will be linked to the access profile of students and their professional skills.
The Internship I has a duration of 2 weeks and is located in the 2nd semester.
This course may be recognized if the student can prove a minimum of 10 years of experience. The type of professional experience that the student has had will be eligible for recognition provided that he/she has been linked during the indicated time to a work practice related to the performance of tasks and functions in specific teams of Palliative Care, and in which it can be shown that he/she has developed the corresponding competences.
Pre-course requirements
It is required to have taken the courses of the first semester of the master's degree.
Objectives
● To train students in the Palliative Care (PC) model based on multidimensional care through interdisciplinary teamwork.
● To provide students with the development of skills, knowledge and methods of team intervention for the adequate detection and relief of suffering through the clinical management of symptoms, emotional, social and spiritual needs in advanced situations and their families, respectively according to their professional profile.
● To train students to develop a comprehensive PC program in the home, outpatient and hospital setting.
● To provide students with a solid training in relation to the care potential of the health system devices to optimize palliative care.
● To offer students techniques for adequate communication with the person in the end-of-life situation and his/her family in order to be able to lead highly complex situations.
● To offer students the necessary tools to have an interdisciplinary vision of the end-of-life situation.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- CN01 - Acquire advanced and specific knowledge in symptom control (physical and emotional) and in communication and patient and family care.
- CN02 - Identify advanced systems in the development of palliative care (PC) programmes.
- CN03 - Identify the resources of the health system related to palliative care (PC)
- CN04 - Recognize the ethical issues in the situation of advanced disease.
- CN05 - Acquire knowledge in the management of complex end-of-life situations including the wish to bring forward death and considering all dimensions of the patient
- CN07 - Identify advanced techniques of assessment and management of physical, psychological (including spiritual) and social needs with a multicultural vision.
- CP01 - Work in a self-directed or autonomous manner in PC teams, formed by peers, specialists or not, and other professionals, respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, the promotion of human rights and the values of a culture of peace and democratic values; using language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
- CP02 - Apply the principles of intellectual honesty and scientific integrity in the professional field of PCs.
- CP03 - Independently carry out tasks in the area of PC according to the protocols established for this purpose.
- CP04 - Manage care practice by adapting it and prioritising the personalisation of care in complex and changing healthcare environments.
- CP05 - Work individually and in teams, assuming responsibilities, within the area of PC.
- CP07 - Empathetically communicate bad news processes in a manner adapted to the informational needs of patients and their families taking into account their cultural background.

Learning outcomes of the subject
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
6.1 Identify the end-of-life situation in real cases.
6.2 Elaborate a therapeutic plan for patients in an end-of-life situation.
6.3 Identify crisis situations in a comprehensive manner.
6.4 Integrate appropriate knowledge for the evaluation and management of patient's symptoms.
6.5 Demonstrate specific skills for communication with patients and family members.
6.6 Integrate organizational and operational models of palliative care.
6.7 Demonstrate ability to work in an interdisciplinary team. 6.8. Provide empathetic communication with patients and families.
Syllabus
Stay in specific palliative care teams (hospital, socio-health or home care). They will be face-to-face in the real clinical environment of centers collaborating with the Master. Students will observe the dynamics of the expert interdisciplinary team, participating in patient visits, family interviews and in both care and teaching sessions in a real clinical practice environment.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
Stay in specific palliative care teams.
Elaboration of the internship portfolio (autonomous work): the result of observation, accompaniment, reflection through tutorials.
Group and/or individual tutorials: All students will have an academic tutor who will accompany the students in tutorials to carry out a reflective work on their learning environment of practices. All this work will be integrated in a portfolio of practices where the student will have to demonstrate the achievement of the objectives agreed in the tutorials.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Elaboration of the internship portfolio (autonomous work). Reflection on the internship. The percentage assigned will be 70%.
Report issued by the clinical tutor (internship tutor) regarding attendance and acquisition of the learning objectives associated with the competencies. The percentage assigned to this evaluation system will be 20%.
Report issued by the academic tutor on competencies and acquisition of the learning objectives associated with the competencies. The percentage assigned to this evaluation system will be 10%.
