Cultural Foundations: Justice and Power in Mass Cinema

Introduction
Mass cinema continues to be an effective format in transmitting the values that the political organization wants to be shared by citizens. What is power or who has the legitimacy to have it? What virtues does power require and what vices can exercising it entail? Is there a standard of justice? On many occasions, in a more or less veiled way, mass cinema, under the appearance of being an entertainment vehicle, dialogues with the fundamental classics of our civilization, remembering and/or reformulating eternal archetypes.
Pre-course requirements
Passion for cinema that says anything and therefore, a certain intellectual restlessness.
Objectives
Improve our understanding of how entertainment vehicles are not harmless, and learn the keys to these models of transmitting essential messages about power and justice
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- CN01 - Students will be able to analyse and interpret imaginary and iconic, symbolic and representational language in the context of humanistic disciplines.
- E04 - Ability to recognise and interpret cultural manifestations.
- E14 - To develop the ability for critical analysis with regard to literary and artistic expression.
- G08 - Ability to carry out research.
- HB04 - Students will be able to develop the capacity for analysis, synthesis and critical thinking.
- HB11 - Students will be able to critically analyse cultural and artistic representations, based on an understanding of their historical context, in order to develop an intercultural perspective and a deeper understanding of the contemporary world.
- HB14 - Students will be able to critically evaluate cultural and humanistic production.
Syllabus
En este curso se cubrirán dos temas:
a) Justicia humana proporcionada por IA: el poder del algoritmo
b) Obligación jurídica y obligación moral, ¿son siempre equivalentes?
Dos películas se centrarán en el tema:
Justicia artificial , de Simón Casal (2024)
Jurado núm. 2 , de Clint Eastwood (2024)
Durante el curso de planteará el debate en torno a otras cintas, como Batman, de Christopher Nolan (2008), El señor de los anillos, de Peter Jackson (2002), Matrix, de Wachosky Br. (1999) o El jardinero fiel, de Fernando Meirelles (2005)
