Introduction
The aging of the population in developed countries has led to major changes in health policies adopted by different Governments. The increase in life expectancy generates an increase in demand for health care, which means an improvement of the quality of life during this life stage.
Due to the physiological and psychological changes that originate the prolongation of life, the care required by this group of population have unique characteristics that require professionals specifically trained to address the health problems of the elderly. It is therefore necessary to train nurses who, while also being prepared for general nursing, can take the care of geriatric patients and are prepared to face the complexity of the needs presented by this age group and their families.
"Aging and dependency" is a subject that gives continuity during the 4th year of the Degree, to the course "Care for the Elderly", taught in 3rd year of Nursing. This subject delves into the care of the elderly from a preventive perspective in order to promote the quality of life in a stage of life that can be experienced with more positive approaches, adapted to the specific characteristics of the elderly and taking advantage of all their personal and vital resources. On the other hand, it addresses the emotional management, essential for self-care of nurses who take care for the elderly and their families.
In this subject three main themes will be dealt with: immigrant carers, physiotherapy in the elderly (aimed at developing autonomy and self-care). The subject chosen on the first day of class for the Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly will also be dealt with. Expert speakers will be invited, papers will be presented at the conference, and the conference will be organised. The students will be trained and supervised beforehand.
Pre-course requirements
- Not required
If there are students in self-isolation due to the COVID-19 health and safety measures, who cannot physically attend class at the University like their peers, teaching staff will carry out online teaching during this isolation period only so that the student(s) in question can attend their classes online. The rest of the students will have to attend their classes in person in the classroom.

- To provide interdisciplinary care alternatives to the geriatric patient worsened, aimed at maintaining the maximum level of physical and personal autonomy

Teaching and learning activities
In person
- Master class
- Cooperative group work
- Student Led Conference: The IX Conference on Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly will be organized, in which the students will lead the organization, under the supervision of the course coordinator. All the students will be members of the scientific or organizing committee. During the subject, the organization tasks of the day will be oriented, which will help to develop leadership skills. Also as moderators of round tables. In addition, each one will present a communication within said day (it will be the group work of the subject).

- Activities on menti-meter or other platforms.
- Dynamics and varied activities to help develop leadership skills.
- Within this subject, 4 theoretical-practical hours on physiotherapy in the elderly will be taught.
- Physiotherapy classes will be theoretical-practical. One part will be carried out masterfully in power-point and in the other part practical maneuvers will be carried out that the teacher will previously carry out. For this it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and the students will be distributed in groups of 2-4 depending on the number of students.
Honor Matrix Assignment Procedure (MH)
- The criterion for assigning Honorary Enrolments (MH) is based on the Excellent (9.0).
- The assignment is solely for the teacher and does not have to give it, even if the student has obtained a mark above 9.0.
- In case the teacher decides to award MH, he will not take into account the numerical mark and the highest, but will evaluate other factors. The HM might not match the highest numeric score.
Procedure for Non-presented Assignment (NP)
- To register an NP in the student's file, it must not have been submitted to any of the evaluation tests throughout the assignment.
- If a student has submitted to one of the evaluation tests, the corresponding percentages in the teaching guide will be applied, with a 0 in those not presented.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Evaluation:
• Teamwork and presentation of the same (40%: Written work 20% + Presentation 20%). It will consist of a communication that will be presented at the Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly Conference as an oral communication or as a poster.
• Group evaluation (10%).
• Continuous evaluation (20%) of the activities to be carried out for the preparation of the day.
• Caregiver syllabus questionnaire (15%)
• Physiotherapy syllabus questionnaire (15%)
Second assessment
For the second call: the note of the continuous evaluation and the group evaluation will be saved. Only the suspended part of: questionnaires or work will be repeated. Honors will not be granted).
Third and fourth assessment (and extraordinary)
The subject will be evaluated with the same system as in the examination and the first resit and marks from previous years will not have any value in the subsequent resits.
Procedure for plagiarism or academic fraud
Any assignment or activity (including exams) in which plagiarism, falsification or academic fraud is detected, will result in a failure of the activity and an academic sanction that will entail from the loss of enrolment rights in this subject, to the opening of a file process.
