Rivka Oxman holds an undergraduate degree and PhD in Architecture from the Technion - Israel Institute for Technology. Since 1989, she has been a lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, where, from 2008 to 2011, she held the position of vice dean for Academic Affairs.
Her prior research was in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Design, where she has explored experimental methods and formalised various design paradigms based on concepts and methods in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence as a basis for the development of design systems.
She is currently performing research on theories of digital design and exploring the contribution of digital technologies to novel paradigms in design and architecture. Recent specific research topics include the impact of material-based fabrication technologies on novel models of design tectonics.
Oxman has been invited to deliver keynote lectures around the world at major conferences, universities and institutions, in Europe, the US, South America, Australia and Asia. She has published over 100 papers in a number of international scientific journals, as well as books and guest chapters. Her work has been widely cited and is highly influential.
In 2006, she was elected member of the Design Research Society for her contributions and achievements in design research.
Since 2009, Rivka Oxman has been an associate editor for Design Studies (Elsevier), the leading international academic journal focused on developing understanding of design processes. She is also part of the editorial board for major international scientific journals and conferences on design research and theory and on digital design.
Rivka Oxman has been a visiting professor at Stanford University (USA), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and has held research appointments at MIT, University of California, Berkeley and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (USA).
