Juan Trias de Bes: Exploracions ceràmiques [Ceramic Explorations]

This lecture discusses 2 single-family homes in which ceramic materials are central to the project, from the point of view of context, the wording of the project and even the construction details. Ceramics are therefore the material of choice for transmitting architectural notions of research, technology, expression and phenomenology.

Juan Trias de Bes (Barcelona, 1964) holds a degree in Architecture (ETSAB, 1991) and opened his professional studio TdB ARQUITECTURA in Barcelona in 1992. In 2013, he earned the distinction of Cum laude for his doctoral thesis "Arquitecturas matéricas" [Material Architectures] from the Department of Architectural Composition and Theory at ETSAB. He has designed a number of institutional buildings, such as the Sarrià University Residence, the seat of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, the central offices of Grífols Laboratories and the ESADE University's campus in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona).

In the field of research, he is a member of the Laboratory for Technological Innovation in Industrialised and Sustainable Construction (LITEIS) at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, where he directs the hARQware Home Business Chair, which aspires to innovate and develop new ways of managing collective housing in so-called Smart Cities. In the area of teaching, he has been invited to lecture on a number of international courses and conferences, such as the ITSEM Programme in Barcelona for students from Canada, the United States and Mexico; as a Final Degree Project panellist at the "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest; on the Master's Degree organised by the ETSAB Cátedra Blanca at the School of Architecture at the University of Santiago, Chile; at the European Institute of Design in Barcelona and the Granada School of Architecture. He has been associated with the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya since 2002, where he teaches Final Degree Project and Degree Project courses

Felipe Pich-Aguilera: Ceràmica i arquitectura, una interacció contemporània [Ceramics and Architecture: A Contemporary Interaction]

The new building in the historic Hospital St Pau complex was designed as an efficient infrastructure enveloped by a ceramic skin, which filters light into the building and creates a contemporary environment that seeks to engage with the texture of the historical structures.

Felipe Pich-Aguilera is an architect and runs his own architecture studio, Equip Arquitectura Pich-Aguilera, which he founded alongside fellow architect Teresa Batlle. He earned a doctorate in Architecture from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya with a thesis entitled "Principales factores socio-económicos que inciden sobre la arquitectura, el caso del modernismo catalán y su época" [The Main Socio-Economic Factors Affecting Architecture: Catalan Modernism and its Time]. Since 2009, he has been the Director of Sustainability at UIC Barcelona's School of Architecture and a lecturer in architectural projects at the same university. He is a founding member of the Architecture and Sustainability Group of the Association of Architects of Catalonia and president of IISBE-Spain (International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment). Since 1996, he has imparted courses and lectured in seminars, workshops and master's programmes at schools of architecture and institutions associated with sustainable construction processes and eco-friendliness in Catalonia, Spain and abroad. Over the course of his professional career, he has striven to use his architecture projects to raise environmental awareness and promote energy efficiency in buildings, in efforts to promote reflection and push current construction processes towards more a sustainable form of building. To do so, he is involved in research, innovation and implementation projects.

Design, Industry and Innovation. Ceramics Applied to Architecture conference cicle is a programme of activities and lectures organised in cooperation with the Ceramics Chair of the International University of Catalonia, addressing the latest technological innovations and research with regard to the application of ceramic materials in architecture.

Registration
