Disruptive uses of the blockchain: the case of NFTs

On Tuesday 29 March at 5.30 p.m., the Aula Magna lecture theatre will host the third lecture in the series titled “Discovering the blockchain” organised by UIC Barcelona.

Under the title “Disruptive Uses of the blockchain: the case of NFTs”, this session will present some ventures that are at the "frontier of the frontier" in terms of the Blockchain revolution and that, paradoxically, are experiencing exponential growth. NFTs, or “non-fungible tokens”, as they are also known, have come to add yet another layer of complexity to the blockchain world. Typically associated with art, they are currently also used in finance, music, video games and logistics. NFTs offer disruptive solutions and the chance to reach hitherto excluded economic actors.

Will art find a resurgence with the use of blockchain technology? Can NFTs make art accessible to all, in other words, democratise it? Or, on the contrary, does this movement represent a depreciation of art? Also, are we in the middle of a giant NFT bubble?

Speakers will answer some of the most frequently asked questions on these subjects: How do you plan to use the blockchain and how will it add value? What problems does the blockchain solve, compared to how we have been doing things so far? Is there a bubble in NFTs? Has art been revitalised or has it become more superficial as a result of the media noise surrounding NFTs? How many competitors are there in the sector? How tied up are you in terms of regulations (or the absence of regulations) when adding value with the blockchain?

Ponents:

Presented and moderated by: Laura Rubio, Head of the Rector's Office and Director of External Relations and Pablo Agnese, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at UIC Barcelona.
