Lecture entitled "Good Practices in Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodations: The Case of Barcelona"

Official Association of Architects of Catalonia (COAC)

On Thursday 10 November, Enrique Rovira-Beleta will participate in a conference entitled "Good Practices in Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodations: The Case of Barcelona", which will take place at the headquarters of the Official Association of Architects of Catalonia (COAC). The event has been organised as part of the 2016 Architecture Congress and aims to analyse and elaborate on good practices in accessibility, taking the case of Barcelona as an example.

Accessible environments and services ensure that people with disabilities have equal opportunities and are not discriminated against when carrying out their daily activities. Accessibility is a matter of fundamental rights, and its practical implementation has benefits for the whole of society.

Enrique Rovira-Beleta will talk about his involvement in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 2004 Forum of Cultures and about providing advice about current regulations on accessibility. He will also discuss his experience as lecturer in the compulsory course on accessibility at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and as a reviewer of Final Degree Projects, insofar as accessibility is concerned. He will also describe his experience as director of the Postgraduate Degree in Accessibility and Design for All, a point of reference at state level as the only architecture school in Spain, and one of the few in the world, to make accessibility a compulsory subject and offer an interactive online postgraduate degree in the field.

Afterwards, Albert Villa, director of the company Válida sin barreras and an expert in stairlift solutions and the elimination of architectural barriers, will talk about accessibility in homes, communities, establishments and public and private buildings. He will analyse special hardship cases and subsequent solutions, such as that put forward by the Complutense University of Madrid.

Lastly, Guillermo Hurtado, an accessibility technician at the Barcelona City Council's Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities (IMD), will provide examples of good practices implemented by the city of Barcelona in areas including the public road system, transport and emblematic buildings, such as the El Born Cultural Centre.

The event will conclude with a question and answer session between the speakers and attending public.
