3, 2, 1…, it’s Christmas!

Everything was ready to officially welcome Christmas to UIC Barcelona: The manger, the tree, the stage, the songs… everything? No, not quite: The Christmas lights were missing. That is why, on the 13 December, before a large audience of university community members, our rector declared the Christmas tree lights switch-on, open.

The event saw a wide range of ages present, young and old. No one wanted to miss the moment when UIC Barcelona welcomed in the Christmas season, eagerly anticipated each year.

David Pastor from the Information and Admissions Department gave the floor to Alfonso Méndiz, who, noting that this is his first Christmas as rector, described himself as something of a storyteller. “I like to tell stories”, he said, “and looking at this magnificent tree, so wonderfully decorated, reminds me of one about a fir tree”.

A short, simple story about a tree that ended up becoming the cradle for baby Jesus, from which the rector hopes “that everyone can draw their own conclusions” this Christmas.  After the story, the lights were turned on and the Royal Christmas Messenger arrived. Children of staff and teaching staff at our University went to speak to the Christmas Messenger and give him their letter containing their hopes and dreams, to be sent to the Royal Court.

Of course, an event like this one couldn't end without a delicious cup of hot chocolate and a snack. The carol singing was the icing on the cake…
