4th Sustainability Conference Addresses Ways to Reduce Ecological Footprint

The 4th UIC Sustainability Conference, whose motto was «How can we reduce our ecological footprint?», was made up of lectures, workshops and roundtable discussions. Approximately 600 UIC students actively participated in the conference.

The conference, organized by the UIC + Sostenible Committee, invited experts from different fields to participate in roundtable discussions, lectures and workshops, and reflect on the state of the planet and how society can contribute to comprehensive human development. The students presented proposals for reducing our ecological footprint through projects that were exhibited on the UIC campus.

The conference opened with a lecture by Tomàs Molina, the Head of Meteorology at the Catalan television station TV3 and the President of the Catalan Council of Scientific Communication, who spoke about climate change. Afterwards, a lecture was given by the architect Toni Solanas, an expert in sustainability and the President of the association Architecture and Sustainability.

The lectures all dealt with the concept of sustainability and highlighted its social and educational facets. "The university should help develop skills that make people more sustainable", said Silvia Albareda, the UIC Director of Sustainability. "These skills are acquired through information, ethics and action". Environmental issues are becoming increasingly serious and affect millions of people. "In the area of education, in particular at university, it is extremely important to educate citizens on the responsible use of natural resources", said Albareda.

The interdisciplinary conference also included a workshop led by Salvador Vidal, a UIC professor of Education, and Antoni París, an expert in communication and the management of knowledge on environmental issues.

In the afternoon, there was a lecture on ethical and sustainable business given by Antonio Argandoña, the Head of the Department of Economics at IESE Business School and holder of the "la Caixa" Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance.

The conference closed with a roundtable discussion on stories from Burkina Faso, the Congo and Guatemala, as told by the people who managed to promote sustainable and humane behaviour in harsh environments.
