Fourth-year Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing students organised this year’s annual seminar on “An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly”. The central theme of this conference is the current reality of elder abuse and neglect. 

 

Dr Cristina Monforte, Director of the Department of Nursing, opened the event and welcomed the attendees. After her speech, the round table "Elder Abuse, an Interdisciplinary Perspective” was held, moderated by Larry Garcia. It was attended by representatives from different areas of health and social care for older people, such as Alexia Olaria, general health and psychotherapeutic psychologist; Paula Bertomeu and Enrique Juan, social workers; Alejandra Vargas, a lawyer and Jordi Vidal, nursing student. 

 

The second part of the event consisted of two oral presentation tables, moderated by Jaume Rodríguez and Andrea Subirá, in which the students discussed their research projects. The topics that were addressed included the prevalence of an ageing population, who are fragile and have multiple pathologies, which can lead to situations of abuse or neglect, and the lack of knowledge of current tools for early detection of elder abuse and neglect. The main conclusion of the presentations given was the importance of developing various strategies that enable a reduction in abuse, as well as its prompt reporting.

 

Till Klasen, President of the Scientific Committee, then summarised the conclusions of the session, before making the award for the best presentation.  The award was given to Ingrid Martin, Jaume Martín and Larry Garcia for their presentation on “Schemes for Prevention of Elder Abuse and Neglect.”

 

Dr. Albert Gallart, Deputy Director of the UIC Barcelona Department of Nursing, and Montserrat Viura, on behalf of the Nursing Department at Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya, closed the 6th seminar on “An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly.”
