Advertising Students Attend Launch of Audi A3 Sportback

In the week of 18-22 March 2013, students from the UIC Bachelor's Degree Programme in Advertising and Public Relations attended the launch of the Audi A3 Sportback that took place in Plaça Catalunya, in the heart of Barcelona.

The students were there to analyse and get ideas from the campaign, which used innovative 3D technology and mapping to present the product. The presentation took place in a giant dome containing an enormous 3D Circle-Vision screen. It was the first commercial campaign to use this technology.

The presentation began in the dark and a voice announced that it was about to begin. One by one, the rings that made up the Audi logo flickered on, followed by flashes of light that began to connect using 3D mapping techniques and create countless glowing cubes that formed the first complete image of the stage. Lines popped out from right to left and drew the outline of the new Audi A3 Sportback. Then the screen hiding the Audi A3 Sportback, on which its silhouette was projected, slowly slid away to reveal the car. The idea was to illustrate the transition from the virtual to the real.

When the car started, it turned itself around to face the audience and its headlights came on. A feeling of movement was created, as the car appeared to move forward through an abstract universe of lines, spirals and tunnels projected on the stage.

When the Audi A3 Sportback came out of the tunnel, the cities of Madrid and Barcelona appeared on the Circle-Vision screen and were reflected on the body of the car. The new Audi A3 Sportback was surrounded by images of the two cities, which had been pre-recorded using Circle-Vision technology to give the audience the sensation of driving through them.
