This is because Barça is one of only four professional clubs in Spain (the others are Real Madrid, Athletic de Bilbao and CA Osasuna) to have remained classed as a not-for-profit sports association since the day it was founded, meaning that it is owned by its members.

Benedito went on to say that the club's highest governing body is its Assembly and that members elect the club president by direct universal suffrage.
