Agustí Benedito Analyses FC Barcelona's Legal Status
Agustí Benedito Benet, the president and CEO of BTO Consultors, gave the lecture «Barça: a PLC?» as part of the continuing education programme provided year-round at the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences.
Benedito's talk centred on an analysis of one of FC Barcelona's most distinctive features: its legal status. This is because Barça is one of only four professional clubs in Spain (the others are Real Madrid, Athletic de Bilbao and CA Osasuna) to have remained classed as a not-for-profit sports association since the day it was founded, meaning that it is owned by its members.
Benedito went on to say that the club's highest governing body is its Assembly and that members elect the club president by direct universal suffrage.
An extensive Q&A session followed the lecture, owing to the significant interest surrounding the speaker, who was a member of the club's board under the presidency of Joan Laporta and himself ran in Barça's 2010 presidential elections.
