Alberto T. Estévez highlights new digital technologies’ capacity for transformation in the field of architecture at an international conference

The UIC Barcelona lecturer was one of the main speakers at the annual Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics held in Colombia

The lecturer at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, Alberto T. Estévez, took part in this year’s annual Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDI), held at the School of Architecture and Design of the Pontifical Bolivarian University in Medellín, Colombia.

Estévez, who took part as one of the main speakers at the event, gave a talk with the title “Transformative Biodigital Architecture: bio-manufacturing+digital-manufacturing”, in which he highlighted the amazing capacity for transformation offered by new digital technologies in the field of architecture. To illustrate this, he presented some of the projects developed over the last 20 years as part of the Genetic Architectures Research Group and the Master’s Degree in Biodigital Architecture. The lecturer is the director of the master’s degree at UIC Barcelona, a pioneering programme in the application of biological and digital techniques in the field of architecture and design.

SIGraDI 2020 was held from 18 to 20 November, and this year’s theme was “Transformative Design”. The event brought together researchers from around the world to address the crucial role of design and architecture in sustaining life, and to explore the synergy of conventional and disruptive technologies in both sectors.

In addition to Alberto T. Estévez, the main speakers included: Onur Yüce Gün, a prestigious Turkish designer and IT professor; Tomohiro Fukuda, associate professor at the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University (Japan); and Nancy Diniz and Frank Meléndez, founding partners of the research and design firm Augmented Architectures.
