The alums Teodora Todoranova and Nuka Mgeladze win a first prize in the contest for the design of 10 blind walls in Barcelona 2026

As part of Barcelona's nomination as World Architecture Capital 2026, UNESCO and the International Union of Architects have selected 10 of the 439 proposals submitted that will transform blind walls into façades. The alums’ project, Azure, has won the competition in the Jardins de Marià Manent, one of the 10 sites in Barcelona that will be transformed.

The former students of the degree in Architecture, Teodora Todoranova and Nuka Mgeladze have been selected to remodel one of the ten blind walls proposed in the International Ideas Competition for Young Architects. Promoted by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the City of Barcelona, the competition aims to remodel 10 blind walls in Barcelona that will enrich the urban landscape, increase the habitability of buildings and improve sustainability

Azure—the work of Todoranova and Mgeladze—proposes a new space in the Jardines de Marià Manent (District of Sarrià) with prefabricated semi-circular balconies that renew two blind walls. This renovation introduces new openings in the houses, thereby improving the quality of life inside the buildings and rejuvenating the external façade of the park.

The jury, made up of seven architects of international prestige, has underlined the simplicity with which this blind wall is resolved. The proposal achieves a maximum effect with minimal effort thanks to the use of vertical structures—inspired by the existing buildings of the neighbourhood—and, in particular, its use of blue, the colour of the poem ‘La nit’ by the poet Marià Manent, who gives her name to the gardens where these blind walls are located.

The winning proposals will transform blind walls in 10 districts across Barcelona. These walls, although they do not represent any role in the exterior of the building, can end up exposed to public view in a permanent provisional state. The aim of this initiative is to eliminate this gap in the landscape and create new façades that will be integrated into the urban landscape. These actions will be part of the legacy of the World Architecture Capital 2026
