Bernat Torres reflects on Evil and Politics in the second philosophical soirée on “The Enigma of Evil”
The lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities at UIC Barcelona delivered a lecture in Vic on the links and differences between these two concepts, which are highly pertinent given the current situation of war in Ukraine
Dr Bernat Torres’ lecture on Evil and Politics took place on 26 March at the Roman Temple of Vic and is the second in a lecture series organised by the Osona Studies Trust and the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences of Vic, as part of the philosophical soirées on “The Enigma of Evil”. With his lecture, Dr Torres provided attendees food for thought by shedding light on the links and differences between the concepts of Evil and Politics.
The lecture was given in a context marked by the current international situation, by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine; a context which highlights the need for reflection, since, as Dr Torres explained, evil and politics emerge as strong factors in conflict situations like the one we are currently witnessing.
Bernat Torres delivered this session as an expert on the work of German philosopher Eric Voegelin (Cologne, 1901 - Palo Alto, 1985), who explored the sources of order and disorder in human societies, taking into account both material and spiritual aspects, “so often neglected in political science”, he added.
According to Dr Torres, this lecture also “illustrates just how pertinent the diagnosis of one of the 20th century’s most important philosophers remains today, and how it provides greater insight into the current international situation.”
