Carla Martos undertakes research in Belgium on the phenomenon of doctors as second victims after a medical error

The doctoral student worked with Professor Kris Vanhaecht at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven)

Carla Martos, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at UIC Barcelona, recently completed a pre-doctoral research visit in the Institute for Healthcare and Policy at KU Leuven (Belgium), alongside Dr Kris Vanhaecht and his team. The topic of research was forgiveness in hospital settings.

In this context, Martos took a deeper look at the phenomenon of second victims: health professionals involved in an incident related to patient safety and who feel traumatised as a result. In this regard, the psychologist revealed how forgiveness can help in the recovery process. She also worked with data concerning the needs of second victims following an incident, taking part in discussion groups and various events.
