Catalonia University Championships Begin in Sant Cugat

The 30th edition of the Catalonia University Championships (CCU) will be kicked off in Sant Cugat del Vallès on Tuesday, 11 November 2014. This year, the UIC is coordinating the championships with help from the Government of Catalonia's General Secretariat for Sport. The competition will bring together 12 universities and around 3,500 participants, who will compete in six categories for team sports and over 20 categories for individual disciplines. Hostilities will commence on Tuesday at the Municipal Sports Centre in Sant Cugat, where the men's indoor football teams will be competing throughout the morning.

The championships are contested by Catalonia’s 12 public and private universities and consist of two preliminary events, held in November and February, followed by the final stage, which is planned for Thursday, 12 March 2015. This year’s sports will include men’s and women’s rugby, basketball, volleyball, handball and indoor football, plus 11-a-side men’s football and 7-a-side women’s football. Most matches will be held in Sant Cugat and the winners of the CCU in each category will qualify for the Spanish Championships.

“The championships have forged very positive links between the Catalan universities”, observed Bruno Alesina, the Head of the UIC’s Sports Service. “The objective of this competition is to enable university students to enjoy playing sport”.
