Ceramic Studies Department Wins Cevisama International Design Competition for Eighth Consecutive Year
Daniel Rivarola and LLuís Casadevall, students in the Ceramic Studies Department at ESARQ School of Architecture, were awarded first and second prize, respectively, in the Cevisama LAB International Design Competition, held in Valencia during the Cevisama trade fair from 7 to 10 February 2012. This is the eighth year that UIC has earned awards in this competition and had its work recognized.
The contest, based on
industrial design and technological innovation in ceramic materials, took place
during the Cevisama trade fair, which had 530 participants this year from all
over the world.
Participants could compete in
two categories: ceramic products created using semi-dry pressing and ceramic
products created by other methods.
Daniel Riverola Comin won first prize for his “Cambio de Fase” (Phase Shift)
piece, which adapted the traditional Spanish earthen jug to current needs and
transformed it into a building material that emphasizes efficiency and respect
for the environment.
Lluís Casadevall Ferrer
received second prize for his design “Encirclage”, which
was praised by the jury for its originality in seamlessly fitting together
different pieces and creating a light-and-shadow effect.
The
members of the jury were Silvia Rodriguez, the head of the Habitat Trends
Observatory at Institute of Ceramic Technology; architect Belén Esparza;
interior designer Julio Guixeres; architect Manolo Blasco; Anatxu Zabalbeascoa,
a journalist and an expert in design and architecture; and Begoña Baigorri, the
Director of Marketing and Design at the Esmalglass-Ithaca group.
These awards highlight the
high level of work produced every year in the ESARQ Ceramic Studies Department,
which is sponsored by the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER).
