Creative Director Pepe Colomer is patron for the Faculty of Communication Sciences graduation ceremony

Students from the Journalism, Audiovisual Communication and Advertising and Public Relations bachelor’s degrees have come to end of their time at the Faculty

The professional world is already waiting for a batch of new communicators. Students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication and the Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Public Relations year of 2020-2021 graduated in a ceremony that took place in the Main Hall at UIC Barcelona and could be held in person in the end, after an academic year marked by the pandemic and health restrictions.

The masterclass was given by creative director Pepe Colomer, who gave a speech in which he encouraged the new graduates to be passionate about their work.  “If you are passionate about what you enjoy, that will help you to push ahead in the professional world,” said Colomer, underlining the fact that passion is “the essential ingredient that must be put into any project.” The creative director also highlighted the importance of creativity in any facet of life and finished his speech with some advice for the new graduates: “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, since you will have to do things many times to learn from your mistakes.”

Then, graduate and communications consultant Javier Quintano said a few words to the new members of the Alumni community and urged them to “move forward with love, determination and hope” to achieve their goals.

There was also time for the class representatives from each degree programme to say a few words. In the case of Journalism, class representative Maria Teresa Diestra expressed her idealistic hopes for the future of the new graduates and said she would like to think that they can achieve what they want and take this profession to another level. The class representative for the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication, Max Smith, talked about how close all the classmates had become over these four years. Finally, Edu Prats and Pablo Perdigo, from the Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Public Relations, talked about the impact they hope to make on the world from now on.

Alfonso Méndiz gave the closing speech for the final graduation ceremony he will be in charge of as dean of the Faculty, since from September he will take up his new role as Rector of the University. Méndiz shared some touching words with the graduates and based his speech on the story of three women who overcame a great deal and were important pioneers in the field of journalism, audiovisual communication and advertising, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Alice Guy and Mathilde Weil, respectively. The dean also told a story about his mother and finished with some touching words for future communicators: “I encourage you to go out and seek happiness and excellence, success will come later, since in life succeeding is not the only important thing, it is also important to be happy and help build a better world through your hard work.”
