Cuides UIC Barcelona opens its doors

The centre is located on the 2nd floor of the Hospital General Universitari de Catalunya and has a multidisciplinary team of professionals from medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, who will provide support to patients and their families

Cuides UIC Barcelona - University Clinic of Support for Advanced Diseases and Palliative Care, has opened its doors and received its first patients. The new clinic was created to care for and provide actively engaged comprehensive, personalised support to anyone with advanced diseases and their families.

Based on a person-centred care model, UIC Barcelona's third university clinic is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals from different specialties such as medicine, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy and social work. In this way, the Clinic not only offers care and follow-up of the symptoms for people with oncological and non-oncological diseases and advanced diseases, but also provides support for their emotional and psychological needs as well. This support includes the patient’s family, who accompanies them throughout the course of the disease.

Accordingly, the “la Caixa” Foundation is contributing to the initiative with its Comprehensive Care Programme for People with Advanced Diseases, implemented by two psychologists and a social worker from the Primary Care Support Team (EAPS) Cuides UIC Barcelona. Besides the medical care offered at the clinic's facilities, Cuides UIC Barcelona also has other support services in other medical specialties, outpatient consultations with outpatient care for discharged patients or first visits, home care and grief care.

As a university clinic, Cuides UIC Barcelona provides a space for students of medicine, nursing and other bachelor’s degree programmes in the field of health to undertake their tutored practical work experiences. It is also a place that will generate and transfer knowledge in the field of palliative care, thanks to the research carried out by the WeCare Chair of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and to the teaching provided in the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

The Cuides UIC Barcelona project has become a reality thanks to the commitment of companies and institutions committed to a new concept of a clinic with a high vocation for care and innovative spaces: to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Participating organisations: Áltima, Bosch Aymerich Foundation, “la Caixa” Foundation, Roviralta Foundation and Manifiesto.
