Deputy Bishop of Barcelona Closes Conference for Religious Studies Teachers

Monsignor Sebastià Taltavull brought the inaugural Conference for Religious Studies Teachers, organized by the UIC's Faculty of Education, to a close on Saturday, 22 November 2014. The aim of the conference was to help these teachers to communicate their faith in accordance with Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation on the Proclamation of the Gospel.

During his talk, the Deputy Bishop of Barcelona emphasized how important it is for religious studies teachers to achieve coherence in their lives. “The lessons imparted by religious studies teachers must coincide with their lifestyles and bear witness to how they live their lives”, he stated. Other subjects Monsignor Taltavull touched upon included the fact that human beings form the centre point of our lives and that human dignity is inviolable.

Following the Deputy Bishop's address, Jaume Armengou, the Vice Rector for Academic Organization and the Teaching Staff, took the opportunity to say a few words. “The job of a religious studies teacher involves great responsibility, because, along with the families, they are the ones who teach children how to know God and how to love Him”, he said.

UIC lecturer Sílvia Albareda, who coordinated the conference, then thanked the 50-plus attendees for their participation. “You’ve helped to build a network amongst yourselves and you’ve been able to learn from one another”, she concluded.

Those attending the event included Carmen Villalba, who has worked as a volunteer for the charity Cáritas Barcelona for almost 40 years; Francisco Villa and Gemma Bas, the producers of the documentary film Yo Creo (I Believe); and numerous university lecturers and school teachers who spoke about their own experiences in the classroom. The conference was spread over two weekends and took as its main focus Pope Francis's Apostolic Exhortation on the Proclamation of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium.
