Different magnitudes of forces applied during hip long-axis distraction mobilization produce different strains on the inferior ilio-femoral ligament but not on the psoas muscle
This is the main conclusion taken from the study carried out at the Surgical and Functional Anatomy Laboratory at UIC Barcelona by Dr Carlos López de Celis, Dr Vanesa González and Dr Albert Pérez, three researchers from the Department of Basic Sciences and the Department of Physiotherapy
Dr Carlos López de Celis, Dr Vanesa González and Dr Albert Pérez, three researchers at the Department of Basic Sciences and the Department of Physiotherapy have published the results from their study titled “The effect of high, medium and low mobilization forces applied during a hip long-axis distraction mobilization on the strain on the inferior ilio-femoral ligament and psoes muscle: A cadaveric study”in the journal Musculoskeletal Science & Practice.
Results from previous studies, which suggest that the changes in elasticity of the joint capsule and surrounding muscles during a hip long-axis distraction mobilization (LADM) could explain the pain-relieving and mobility-improving effects of the technique, provided a basis against which the researchers from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences could compare what happens when three different magnitudes of forces are applied during mobilisation.
Following three different distraction tests using different magnitudes of forces on anatomical specimens, Dr López de Celis, Dr González and Dr Pérez-Bullmunt have been able to prove that different magnitudes of forces applied during hip long-axis distraction mobilization produce different strains on the inferior ilio-femoral ligament but not on the psoas muscle.
