Dr Barraquer, a member of the University Advisory Council, has been appointed president of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research

Rafael Barraquer, a recently member of the University Advisory Council at UIC Barcelona, has been appointed president of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER). He will hold this position between 2018 and 2019.

The European Association for Vision and Eye Research is a scientific society with international prestige that brings together almost a thousand researchers from the fields of ophthalmology and vision sciences, who represent fifty countries. Barraquer was named president during the celebration in Nice (France) of the XX EVER Congress that took place between 27 and 30 September.

EVER was founded in 1997 with the aim of bringing together all European associations involved in ophthalmology and vision science research. This association, through a foundation, offers young ophthalmologists from the most disadvantaged areas to train in laboratory and scientific research techniques, which is one of EVER’s aims. Other EVER aims include promoting and progressing in the areas of basic and clinical research, and contribute to the dissemination of information and scientific research through conferences and publications.

Dr Barraquer, a member of the University Advisory Council at UIC Barcelona, holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and is a specialist in ophthalmology.  He is currently adjunct medical director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre (COB). He is also the founder and director of the Unit for Ocular Oncology within the same centre. He has a strong research trajectory, and was formerly a tenured professor at the Joaquín Barraquer Ophthalmology Research Chair at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, from when it was founded.
