Dr Carolina Serra presents the ‘The History of Advertising in Catalonia’ at the Palau Robert

The presentation analysed the past, present and future of the advertising sector and was attended by different professionals from the world of communication, such as Oriol Duran, Media Secretary of the Government of Catalonia and alumnus of UIC Barcelona

On 28 March, Carolina Serra, lecturer at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of UIC Barcelona, presented her work The History of Advertising in Catalonia at the Palau Robert in Barcelona. The event brought together different professionals from the world of communication to accompany Serra in her book presentation and speakers gave an overview of the most relevant facts of the history of advertising, as well as an analysis of the future of the sector.

The two presentations were made by Raul Gilabert, vice-president of the Advertising Business Association; Alex Marquina, vice-president of public relations at the Col·legi del Màrqueting i la Comunicació de Catalunya; Muntsa Dachs, co-author of the book; and Carolina Serra. In their speeches they addressed the past and future of advertising in Catalonia, a territory that has long been a pioneer in the sector, even though advertising can be considered an activity as old as humanity, as commented in the presentation.  The UIC Barcelona lecturer also defended advertising as being a part of world heritage, seeing as it is one of the few disciplines that allows us to understand society from 50 to 80 years ago.

Carolina Serra, who has edited the book and has written one of the chapters, defines the work as an analysis of almost 150 years of publicity in the country. One of the aims was to highlight the role Catalonia has had in the history of the industry, and to establish the incalculable value of the legacy of Catalan advertising.

The event was also attended by Oriol Duran, media secretary of the Government of Catalonia and alumnus of UIC Barcelona; Jofre Llombart, dissemination secretary of the Government; Rosa Roma, dean of the Col·legi del Màrqueting i la Comunicació de Catalunya; and Jordi Creus, editor of the publishing house Sàpiens.
