Dr. Embree Analyses Dialogue Between Nursing and Phenomenology

On Thursday, 13 December 2012, Dr. Lester Embree, a professor at Florida Atlantic University in the United States, gave a lecture titled «My Visit to Phenomenological Nursing» to the students and teaching staff of the Master's Programme in Nursing Sciences.

Embree analysed the developments that
phenomenological nursing has undergone in English-speaking countries in recent
years.

The job of nursing, which focuses not only on
the cure but on the care, includes aspects that are not addressed by the
biomedical sciences, such as the patient’s life experience, culture, background
and relationships. According to the expert, the dialogue between nursing and
phenomenology becomes interesting when an individual's human experience, and
the changes he or she undergoes when faced with vulnerability and illness,
becomes a topic for study.

The lecture was attended by almost 50 students
on the Master’s Programme in Nursing Sciences and teachers from the Faculty of
Medicine and Health Sciences. It was held as part of the health research
project being conducted jointly by professors from the Faculty of Humanities
and the Nursing Department.

Dr. Embree is an internationally renowned
phenomenologist. He inspired, founded and now runs the Organization of
Phenomenological Organizations (OPO), a network that links more than 160
phenomenology societies around the world.
