Dr. Javier Junceda Speaks at Asturian Day Celebrations

Dr. Javier Junceda, the Dean of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, participated as the opening speaker at the Asturian Day celebrations held at the Barcelona Asturian Centre on Saturday, 14 September 2013.

The event took place in the grand hall of Centelles Palace and was presided over by Barcelona City Council member Raimond Blasi and the president of Barcelona Asturian Centre, Enrique Delgado.

The speeches were preceded by a parade by Andecha pol Raigañu, the Barcelona Asturian Centre’s pipe band, which moved through the streets around Plaça de Sant Jaume to the beat of the music.

In his speech, titled “Austercelona”, Junceda talked about the similarities and differences between Asturias and Barcelona. Enrique Delgado, the president of Barcelona Asturian Centre, thanked the institutions and audience for attending, and highlighted the work carried out by the government of the Principality of Asturias to benefit Asturian communities throughout the world.

This was followed by a performance by singer Andrés Cueli, who sang two traditional Asturian songs. Víctor Álvarez, a piper from the School of Asturian Studies, and pipe major Julio Álvarez played the Catalan and Asturian anthems, respectively.

Present at the event were members of Barcelona City Council, representatives from political parties, associations and regional centres, and members and supporters of Barcelona Asturian Centre. This year was the 126th time Asturian Day had been celebrated in Barcelona.
