Dr Josep Argemí donates a 1920 Reichert microscope to UIC Barcelona
The donation of the valuable device, the same model used by Scientist Ramon y Cajal, was made during the posthumous tribute ceremony to Dr Jordi Cervós, first rector of UIC Barcelona, and as part of the University’s 25th anniversary celebration events.
UIC Barcelona adds a new device to the collection of historical medical artefacts donated by Dr Josep Argemí Lacoma. The new addition is a Reichert microscope manufactured in Germany in 1920, with its original case.
The device belonged to Dr Josep Argemí Lacoma, grandfather of the rector emeritus of UIC Barcelona. In perfect condition, the device maintains its beauty and functionality, allowing one to visualize samples exactly the same way as nearly 100 years ago. This model is the same model used for its accuracy and quality by Santiago Ramón y Cajal in his research.
The collection of historical medical artefacts can be seen in the Auditorium on the Sant Cugat Campus. All of the items originate from the medical practice that Dr Josep Argemí Lacoma (1883-1944) ran in Sabadell between 1907 and 1944. Following his death, his private collection was passed on to his grandson.
The donation was formalised during the tribute ceremony to Dr Jordi Cervós, first rector of UIC Barcelona, on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death. Also attending were Dr Alfonso Méndiz, rector of UIC Barcelona; Dr Albert Balaguer, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; Dr Lluís Giner, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry; and Dr Josep Argemí.
