Dr. Judith Urbano Presents Book on August Font i Carreras
On Thursday, 20 June 2013, Dr. Judith Urbano, the Assistant Director of the ESARQ School of Architecture, presented her book Eclecticismo y Arquitectura. August Font i Carreras (1845-1924) at the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona.
The book’s presentation was organized by the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona and the ESARQ School of Architecture, and took place in the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona. Also attending was Dr. Mireia Freixa, the head of the History of Art Department at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the director of the UB’s Research Group on the History of Contemporary Art and Design (GRACMON), of which Dr. Urbano is also a member.
Dr. Freixa introduced the book's author by highlighting the unpublished research she has carried out and the years of joint work she has undertaken as part of GRACMON, in which both professors participate. Dr. Urbano then presented the research outlined in the book using some photographs of August Font's work.
In her speech, the author pointed out that this is the first book written about the architect. As she explained, the book includes an analysis of eclecticism and historicism, two artistic movements of the 19th century that have long been undervalued and rejected. The author focuses on the architect August Font i Carreras (1845-1924) as an example of an eclectic architect who worked in Barcelona, Tarragona, Vilafranca del Penedès, Tortosa and Zaragoza.
August Font championed the use of iron in contemporary architecture and was one of the first eight teachers at the Barcelona School of Architecture. He was also a member of three academies and of the Association of Architects of Catalonia, of which he later became president.
His most famous work is the façade and lantern tower of Barcelona Cathedral. His other famous works include the Palace of Fine Arts, which was created for the Universal Exhibition of 1888, the Palau de les Heures, the Maison Dorée and the Las Arenas bullring.
