Dr. Lorente Contributes to Manual on Multidisciplinary Pain Treatment

Dr. Marian Lorente, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, published a chapter in the manual «Guidelines in Multidisciplinary Pain Management».

The chapter, "Anatomical Pathways of Pain: How Acupuncture Works", explains that the physiological players involved in how the body processes pain (pain receptors, the peripheral nervous system, the spinothalamic tract and how pain reaches the encephalon and brain) are important determinants in how pain is treated. Lorente recognizes that pain is subjective. "Acute pain as well as chronic pain are important issues in hospitals, as they affect patients' quality of life", she said.

The book Guidelines in Multidisciplinary Pain Management deals with treating chronic pain from a multidisciplinary perspective. The manual was written by experienced professionals in treating chronic pain from different medical fields with the support of the American Academy of Pain Management. It serves as a guide to understanding the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to treating chronic pain and the practical applications of these techniques.
