Dr Ricard Mamblona organised an event entitled "Cinematic Visions of Illness" at four state hospitals in Majorca

Between 23 and 27 November, four state hospitals in Majorca (Manacor, Inca, Son Llàtzer and Son Espases) hosted the "Cinematic Visions of Illness" event, as part of the Nomad Section of FICAE [Es Baluard], the International Festival of Short Films and Art about Diseases.

This event was made possible through cooperation between the Es Baluard Modern and Contemporary Art Museum in Palma and the EPSAL Psychology and Health Centre.

FICAE is co-directed by Dr Ricard Mamblona, a lecturer in the Faculty of Communication Sciences, and Dr Pepe Miralles, from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), and organised by the Art and Illnesses Chair from the Faculty of Fine Arts at UPV.

FICAE [EsBALUARD] involved the screening of a selection of short films divided into four subject areas: HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, mental health, autoimmune diseases and oncological diseases. Based on a cinematic approach, the event aimed to tackle issues which must continue to be raised, in this case in partnership with the hospitals' social and health workers, patients and patient associations.

A meeting was held during the last session at Es Baluard to present the conclusions of the discussions which took place at the hospitals. Participants included the event organisers, CineCiutat's Marina González and the distinguished cultural critic Jordi Costa.

During this week-long event, a selection of films presented in the Official Section of the first edition of FICAE in 2014 was screened at Es Baluard's Intermedio II venue. These included El comprador de tiempo (The Buyer of Time), directed by Gemma Garcia, and Tormenta callada (Silent Storm) by Xavi Buxeda Marcet, both former Audiovisual Communication students.
