«El Principiant», Big Winner at First Barcelona University Theatre Festival

Several Catalan universities presented plays at the competition, which was organized by different university theatre groups in Barcelona and took place on Friday, 10 May 2013. The UIC Theatre Group presented its play El Principiant (The Novice), which premiered in the university's main lecture hall on Wednesday, 24 April 2013. Nominated in every category of the Barcelona University Theatre Awards, The Novice won six awards.

As well as the awards for best play and best director, The Novice also won in the categories of best programme, best leading actor (Marc Vallès Gómez, a third-year Humanities and Cultural Studies student), best cast (for the whole group) and the honorary award for best original music.

FEM Teatre FME and La Coquera from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the UB Scenery Group and the UB Theatre Group from the Universitat de Barcelona and the UIC Theatre Group respectively presented the following five plays in the competition: Dele's Sofa, Seven Against Aeschylus, Bohemian Lights, Almsidaé and The Novice.

The UIC theatre group was founded six years ago and director Carles Bigorra was visibly pleased with the awards. "These awards arose from a seed that appears to have begun to bear fruit. They are a sign to us that we are on the right path and have chosen the right criteria, although we still have a lot to learn", he said.

The Novice is a loose adaptation of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that sets the story in the present day. "This story allowed us to tread on more poetic ground and express something more: certain concerns and certain values that go well beyond the present moment of the performance", Bigorra explained. "In fact, The Little Prince helped us get past that. Through his innocence, our Novice meets a series of characters who teach him about the most important values in life, in a society that places too much importance on money and has abandoned what is most essential".

"For me, theatre is a fundamental part of university students' education, as they learn to depend on others, work as a team and open themselves up to others", the director added. In this regard, a new theatre group was created in the 2012-2013 academic year on the Sant Cugat campus. On Friday, 26 April 2013, they presented their first play, Game of Chance.
