Eleventh ASCER Ceramics Chair Begins with Visit to Cumella Workshop and Disset Company

On Wednesday, 1 October 2014, students in the ASCER Ceramics Chair at the ESARQ School of Architecture visited the workshop of ceramicist Toni Cumella and the facilities of Disset, a company that specializes in the study and production of pavements and ventilated façades. It was the Chair's first day in its eleventh edition. The ASCER Ceramics Chair in Barcelona is directed by Dr. Vicenç Sarrablo, an architect and the Director of the ESARQ School of Architecture Technical Area, and by architects Dr. Jordi Roviras and Cristina García-Castelao.

Students and lecturers in the Ceramics Chair, along with guest architects, spent the first day of the Chair on a trip to the facilities of the company Disset in Mataró.

The Disset team is made up of Fran Sánchez (architect), Roser Febrero (biologist) and Daniel Saurina (engineer), who described their latest projects to the visitors: works by renowned architects such as Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, Amanda Levete and Rafael de la Hoz.

The students then visited the company showroom to examine the systems and pieces, some of which were designed by ceramist Toni Cumella, who had welcomed the group from the Chair to his workshop in Granollers.

Since the Ceramics Chair was set up at the UIC School of Architecture in 2004, more than 200 students have expanded their training with more knowledge about ceramics, as well as the enormous possibilities that ceramic tiles can have in the creative and conceptual work of these professionals.

In these ten years, the students have developed and presented many different proposals of new applications with an innovative vision for ceramics. All these projects are included in the Ceramic Materials reports published each academic year. They are available on the website of the Network of Chairs.
